After its first weekend, fans are eager to know the Godzilla x Kong box office results. How much did The New Empire earn on its domestic and worldwide opening? Is the movie set to be a flop or a success? Here’s everything you need to know.
How much money did Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire make at the box office?
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened with $80 million in North America, making it the second biggest MonsterVerse opening so far.
The initial predictions suggested that the film would only open with $50 million domestically. But, as per Variety, the movie’s first weekend numbers have dominated the box office. Its $80 million weekend is the best for a MonsterVerse movie since 2014’s Godzilla, which started the franchise with a $93 million opening.
As for the other MonsterVerse movies so far, Kong: Skull Island had a $61 million opening, Godzilla: King of the Monsters took $47 million in its opening, and Godzilla vs. Kong had a $31 million day and date opening along with MAX.
To add to the domestic numbers, Godzilla x Kong brought in another $114 million from the international market to reach a worldwide total of $194 million. This was also far better than the movie’s estimated global opening of $135 million. But is this opening enough to put Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on the road to profitability?
Is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire a flop or success?
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has had a very successful opening. The movie is on its way to being a box office hit, with minimal competition throughout April.
Considering that its $135 million production budget is the lowest for a MonsterVerse movie yet, Godzilla x Kong has strong odds of becoming the most profitable film in the franchise yet. This will be largely dependent on whether the movie has strong legs in its second and third weekends.
But since the MonsterVerse movies have always done extremely well in international markets and Godzilla x Kong has already seen a $44 million opening in China, the film looks to be surely profitable for Legendary and Warner Bros. Discovery. It has also yet to open in Japan and several other promising markets.
Furthermore, the movie will see fewer rivals for box office supremacy throughout April. Wide releases like Monkey Man, Civil War, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and Challengers will offer audiences some more variety. However, there’s relatively little blockbuster competition coming throughout the month.
So, Godzilla x Kong could continue to perform similarly to Dune: Part Two if it has a strong second weekend.
