Since 2017, Kevin Spacey’s career and reputation have taken a blow due to sexual assault allegations. It all began on October 29, 2017, when Buzzfeed interviewed Anthony Rapp. According to People Magazine, in this interview, Rapp, who is openly gay, revealed disturbing details of Spacey’s inappropriate behavior. He stated that when he was 14 years old, the then 26-year-old Spacey tried to seduce him. Rapp said, “He was trying to seduce me. I don’t know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”
In response, Spacey regretted his actions on Twitter (now called X). The Academy Award winner tweeted that Anthony Rapp’s story shocked him, and he profusely apologized for his behavior. Furthermore, he revealed that he did not recall his encounter with the then-14-year-old because it occurred three decades ago. He assumed that he was under the influence of alcohol when he approached Rapp.
Subsequently, several other names, such as Heather Unruh, Roberto Cavazos, Tony Montana, and more, came forward and accused Kevin Spacey of abuse. In 2020, Anthony Rapp sued Spacey for intentional infliction of emotional distress, sexual assault, and sexual battery. However, the court and its jury found the actor not guilty and ordered Rapp to pay Spacey close to $40,000 for tarnishing his image.
The Channel 4 docuseries Spacey Unmasked takes a closer look at Kevin Spacey’s life, career, and the accusations against him. Max will release it in the USA on an unrevealed date.
Why Did Kevin Spacey Call Channel 4 a dying network?
According to Variety, Kevin Spacey responded to the aforementioned documentary’s claims on social media with anger and displeasure. Spacey released a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) revealing that he asked Channel 7 for a week to respond to the allegations. However, the broadcaster denied his request. The actor believes he is being mistreated and deserves an opportunity to defend himself.
His statement read, “Over the last week, I have repeatedly requested that @Channel4 afford me more than 7 days to respond to allegations made against me dating back 48 years and provide me with sufficient details to investigate these matters. Channel 4 has refused on the basis that they feel that asking for a response in 7 days to new, anonymized and non-specific allegations is a “fair opportunity” for me to refute any allegations made against me.”
Furthermore, the actor called Channel 4 a dying network that desperately required ratings. He called Spacey Unmasked a one-sided documentary, and its contents are baseless and inauthentic. “I will not sit back and be attacked by a dying network’s one-sided “documentary” about me in their desperate attempt for ratings,” he said.
Spacy ended his statement by saying that he would respond to the project very soon.
